I had always enjoyed Walt Kelly’s Pogo comic strip since I had dizcovered my mom’s Equal Time for Pogo. A collection of comics prior to the 1968 election.
So even though Pogo Structures has nothing to do comic strip, I always thought it would be cool if I could tie the two together. I went through the comic looking at the characters but the only one I liked was Pup Dog
Pogo was always poling around the swamp in a john boat but they were all named after newspapers the strip appeared in or after reporters or editors. But then thumbing through the copy of Equal Time for Pogo I found it.
Congressman Moop and his aide Feeble E. Merrly are in the Okefenokee Swamp discussing the election with Pogo.
Congressman Moop: What we maybe ought to do, Pogo is have a Sanity Test for Voters.
Pogo: How come Congressman?
Congressman Moop: We want to give folks a brain probe to carry a gun, to drive a car. But for the most risky thing of all, choosin’ a president, we let anyone over 21 go in there an’ lay the country on the line.
and later Pogo asks “Who is gonna examine the candidate?” The answer is “Well now! if he ain’t a voter, he’s home free right?.”
It just seemed appropriate for the times we’re living in today
